VacationHomeRentals.com - New York City
This website services the entire world and provided direct owner-renter interactions. Though we have never used this service, we have heard good things about from a variety of friends who have rented their properties for short-term. Check out the site and you'll find a number of opportunities and price ranges including one week rentals.
*If the short term rental prices for Manhattan are to steep for our budget, be sure to explore the surrounding metro area such as Brooklyn, Queens, and NJ. The short-term prices in those area translate more fairly to the real monthly rental prices of unfurnished apartments in NYC.

To that end, we found this book over on Amazon, which has 76 reviews, and, seemingly, is very useful and informative. Though, with in the reviews section there seems to be a debate as to the legitimacy of the reviews themselves.
Here is another book. Modern Real Estate Practice - New York *This one has two reviews, but only 2 stars.
